Karl Kani is one of the founding brands of streetwear as we know it today. Carl Williams launched it in Brooklyn in 1989, sewing the garments himself, and it was the first urban clothing label led by a Black person to reach real scale, dressing Tupac, Biggie and Aaliyah just as hip hop stopped being a niche. The pinstripe, borrowed from tailoring, is one of the devices the brand has used ever since to bring a dressier touch into street style.

White with a fine stripe is easier to wear than a big logo: it works with baggy jeans, cargos, joggers or shorts, and holds up well under an open overshirt.
